Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   For more than a century, the bicycle has been an important part of the lives of most Americans and the bicycle is a viable and environmentally sound form of transportation and an excellent form of recreation; and

 

WHEREAS:   Lawrence, Kansas, has been named a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists and creating bicycle-friendly communities has been shown to  improve citizens' health, well-being, and quality of life, to boost community spirit, to improve traffic safety, and to reduce pollution and congestion; and

 

WHEREAS:   The education of cyclists and motorists as to the proper and safe operation of bicycles and motor vehicles is important to ensure the safety and comfort of all users; and

 

WHEREAS:   The League of American Bicyclists and independent cyclists throughout our state are promoting greater public awareness of bicycle operation and safety education in an effort to reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities; and

 

WHEREAS:   Many of the bike related activities during the month of May are initiated cooperatively between citizens and public service organizations; and the month of May provides several opportunities to create partnerships that increase awareness of bicycle safety issues;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Aron E. Cromwell, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of May, 2011 to be

 

“BICYCLE MONTH”

 

and the week of May 16-20, 2011 as

 

“Bike-To-Work Week”
