RE:               Bid date for Youth Sports Complex Restroom

Please include the following item on the City Commission agenda for consideration at the April 26th, 2011, meeting:

Set a bid opening date of May 17, 2011, for the purchase and installation of a new CXT restroom facility at the Youth Sports Complex.

Project Description

The City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department requests Commission approval to bid the purchase and installation of new precast concrete restroom facility at the south end of the Youth Sports Complex. Currently, the only permanent restrooms are located in the concession stand building at the east end of the complex The proposed restroom facility will replace some of the portable restroom facilities that have been in use since the fields were constructed.

The fields at the Youth Sports Complex are in use from March through October each year, nearly 7 days a week. To improve the complex for players and fans there is a need to add a number of modern restroom facilities, in the coming years, near the most active parts of the complex (map).

In recent years the City has been very successful with the use of precast concrete restroom facilities in a number of our public parks. These units are assembled in a factory and delivered to the site fully constructed. This type of facility is more cost effective and easier to maintain than traditional stick built facilities. We anticipate the new restroom for the complex will be very similar to the restroom that was installed in (Hobbs Park) in 2009.

Project Funding

It is estimated this restroom facility will cost approximately $48,500, plus an additional $20,000 for site preparation and utility extensions. Funding for this project is proposed to come from the Sales Tax Reserve Fund.

Action Request

The City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department staff requests approval from the City Commission to set a bid date of May 17th, 2011, for the purchase and installation of a new restroom facility at the Youth Sports Complex.
