Re: 32nd Basic Recruit Academy Recruitment Efforts_____________________
BACKGROUND
The City Commission and the City Manager’s Office have committed to ensuring the Police Department is fully staffed. The City Manager recently authorized the Department to begin the recruitment process for the 32nd Basic Recruit Academy. The application process opened on April 1, 2011.
RECRUITMENT EFFORTS
The Training Unit is making every effort to ensure recruitment initiatives reflect the diversity of the community we serve. To date we have advertised on over 14 websites including websites that specifically serve minorities, veterans and women. An insert was included with the April Utility bill which was sent out to 32,000 Lawrence residents. Officers have attended a career fair at Haskell Indian Nations University and will attend one at the University of Kansas at the end of April.
Media coverage includes the Lawrence Journal World and Fox 4 News in Kansas City. Flyers have been distributed to eight local fitness clubs as well as the East Lawrence and Holcomb Recreation Centers.
As a new initiative, the Training Unit is forging relationships at the University of Kansas with the Athletics Department and School of Education. The exchange to date has been very positive and I believe this will prove to be very productive. Arrangements have already been made to make presentations in the next few weeks.
