WHEREAS: Since 1990, the United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center has helped thousands of volunteers find meaningful ways to use their time and talents to make Douglas County a better place, providing more than 100 nonprofit organizations with the volunteer workforce they need to accomplish their missions; and
WHEREAS: During National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, the United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center is applauding our community’s volunteers through the Celebration of Volunteers recognition luncheon and by sponsoring the annual citywide day of service, the Day of Caring, on Saturday, April 16; and
WHEREAS: Lawrence and Douglas County citizens are among the most generous in the nation when it comes to volunteering. An amazing 39.3% of Lawrence residents volunteer every year, far above the national average of 26.5%, giving an average of 52.4 hours a year and contributing an average of $160.8 million in services; and
WHEREAS: Everyone, no matter what their age, interests, passions or abilities, can help change a life in Douglas County by volunteering. The United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center helps people find meaningful opportunities, whether they want to give just a few hours or become a key member of an agency’s team, use their professional and personal skills or trying something new.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the week of April 10 – 16, 2011 as
A CELEBRATION OF VOLUNTEERING WEEK
in the City of Lawrence.
