Lawrence, Kansas
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library, Altrusa International of Lawrence, The Community Mercantile, Dole Institute of Politics, Douglas County Bank, Douglas County Community Foundation, Douglas County Law Library, Footprints, Friends of the Lawrence Public Library, Kansas Audio Reader Network, Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence-Douglas County NAACP, Lawrence Public Library Foundation, Lawrence Public Schools, Leo Hayden & Q5 Gallery, Liberty Hall, Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living, The Raven Bookstore, Signs of Life Gallery, Sloan Law Firm, Theatre Lawrence, University of Kansas Libraries, Wells Fargo Bank, and Lawrence citizens partner to cultivate literacy and a vibrant life of mind; and
WHEREAS: For twelve years, citizens have supported Read Across Lawrence, an initiative that encourages all Lawrence residents to read the same book at the same time and gather throughout the community to discuss its themes and values; and
WHEREAS: The 2011 selection is To Kill a Mockingbird, the Pulitzer Prize-Winning novel by Harper Lee; and
WHEREAS: This enduring story evokes lifelong lessons about tolerance, justice, and friendship and sparks our collective American imagination; and
WHEREAS: Community book discussions, film screenings, theatre performances, and special events will be hosted by the Lawrence Public Library and local partners throughout the city of Lawrence;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of April, 2011 to be
and encourage all residents to read and participate in one or more public discussions and events about this classic American novel by the famous author, Harper Lee.
