Street Closure (700 block of New Hampshire & Vermont) 4:30 p.m.

Mile Start Time 5:30 p.m.

Mile Finished 5:45 p.m.

Streets Reopen 6:15 p.m.

The Mile Run event would consist of only one race. The starting line (see attachment) would be on the 700 block of New Hampshire and the finish line would be placed on the 700 block of Vermont. The runners would start on New Hampshire and travel south to 11th Street, turn right and continue west on 11th Street until they turn right onto Vermont Street in order to reach the finish line. The Start and Finish line areas require minimal set-up and tear down effort, thus the short closure time. We are requesting that no parking be allowed from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on the 700 block of New Hampshire and the portion of the 700 block of Vermont that is part of the Temporary ROW. Additionally, we are requesting no parking on the west side of the 800, 900, 1000 block of New Hampshire Street, the north side of the 100 blocks of East and West 11th Street and the east side of the 800, 900 and 1000 block of Vermont Street.  At the recommendation of local law enforcement, only these portions of New Hampshire, 11th and Vermont Streets will be “closed” during the race. So traffic heading in the opposite direction on these streets will be allowed to keep traffic disruptions to a minimum.  The parking lots located along this area would have course marshals at each entrance to manage traffic during the race. Race organizers are currently working with the Lawrence Police Department to identify which intersections officers will control and where course marshals will need to be placed to ensure a safe and manageable race venue. During the race the runners will follow a lead gator, and a second gator with KU athletic trainers will follow the runners.

Overall the runners will complete the race in times ranging from 4.5 minutes to 9 minutes. The Lawrence community will be invited to participate so they run alongside several elite milers who will travel to Lawrence for the KU Relays.
