WHEREAS: February is National Heart Month; and
WHEREAS: Every year, the lives of hundreds of thousands of women in America are tragically cut short by the effects of cardiovascular disease; and
WHEREAS: The American Heart Association’s ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign is a movement that is dedicated to raising awareness of heart disease and sounding the alarm that heart disease is the number one killer of women in America; and
WHEREAS: The ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign encourages awareness of the issues surrounding women and heart disease and also calls for action by individuals, health professionals and policy makers to take steps to educate the population on how to improve their overall health and ultimately wipe out heart disease; and
WHEREAS: In 2010, the American Heart Association set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by twenty percent while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by the year 2020; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of February, 2011 as
“NATIONAL HEART MONTH”
