RE:

National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project (NBPD) Data Submittal

The Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization (L-DC MPO) has submitted the tallied bicyclists and pedestrians counts from 2009 and 2010 to the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project.

Local counts were made possible with the help of trained local volunteers. The data will be used to track the region’s progress on increasing non-motorized mode share, leverage additional federal funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects, evaluate projects, and improve travel demand modeling. This information will be useful at all levels of planning and help strengthen our bid to raise our Bicycle Friendly Community designation from the bronze to the silver or gold level.

Lawrence is in the forefront of collecting this data and will be part of a larger nationwide effort to establish a national database of bicycle and pedestrian count and survey data generated by consistent methods and practices. The data is available online at http://www.lawrenceplanning.org/documents/BikeCount10.pdf.

The MPO with support from the Bicycle Advisory Committee and local volunteers will conduct counts in Lawrence again in the fall of 2011.
