CITY MANAGER’S REPORT

Utilities to Begin Sewer Lining Project

The Lawrence Utilities Department has contracted with Insituform to repair/reconstruct areas of the City’s sewer lines to decrease the amount of I/I (inflow and infiltration of water into the system). Utilities staff determines the sections that need replacement based on pipe age and material, known defects identified through TV inspection, unused connections, depth and the above ground conditions. The contractor will notify residents in the areas affected via a door hanger prior to the start of the project. The information will include date and time that work will be conducted, steps that the resident should take, and contact information. The process does not require trenching or digging up the current sewer lines and replacing them. The technology is called “cured-in-place-pipe” where a sleeve is rolled in the existing sewer line, expanded to line the pipe, and covers any existing cracks or leaks. Use of the process is expected to add an additional 50-100 years of life to the sewer lines and is a considerably more cost effective method of sewer main rehabilitation when compared to the other more invasive methods. A map of the segments that are included in this year’s project is available online. To see more about the CIPP process Insituform uses follow this link.
