B.  The Minutes of the August meeting were unanimously approved as submitted.

C.  Unfinished Business

            1.   Final Fridays Event:  Commissioner Pennington reported that by all accounts, the first Final Fridays event was a great success.  It was reported that there was approximately ten times the regular Friday traffic downtown.  Restaurants were full, galleries were full and there were many who enjoyed the event.

            2.  Standard operating practices for committees:  Commissioner Kelly reminded committee chairpersons to update their standard operating practices.

D.  New Business

            1.  It was announced that Matthew Herren resigned.  Commissioner Kelly indicated that she was contacting several prospective commission members.  Since Commissioner Herren had been the secretary, a new secretary was needed.  Commissioner Craig volunteered to serve as secretary.  There were no objections.

            2.  Phoenix Awards:  Each of the six nominations were reviewed and discussed.  After discussion, Commissioner Pennington made a motion to recognize Carol Ann Carter, John Staniunas, Ron Chinn, Dalton Howard and Anthea Scouffas as the 2010 Phoenix Award winners.  It was decided that Carol Ann Carter would receive the Visual Arts award; Dalton Howard the Special Commissioners’ Award; Anthea Scouffas the Educator in the Arts award; John Staniunas the Performing Arts award, and Ron Chinn the Design Arts award.  Commissioner Lamb seconded the motion.  The motion was approved unanimously.

Commissioner Pennington mentioned looking at changing the Phoenix Awards in the future but enabling Cultural Arts Commissioners to submit award nominations and possibly consider three awards per year.  Commissioner Craig suggested that this be a discussion for next month’s meeting and set forth the following three ideas 1) change the Phoenix Awards to make it a single “arts laureate” award annually; 2) change the Phoenix Awards to being annual to biennial (once every two years); 3) reduce the number of awards from five to a lesser number.

The invitations for the Phoenix Awards were also briefly discussed.
