Re:

KU Athletics Homecoming Event

At the August 17, City Commission meeting, the Commission approved a right-of-way permit for two coordinated events centered around Coach Turner Gill’s radio show.  The first event on September 2 was rained out, however, the committee is still meeting and planning the October 21 Homecoming pep rally.

At the October 21st Homecoming event, the committee would like to request alcohol be permitted in clearly designated (and fenced) tents in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street.  There are currently two businesses that are interested in having a tent outside of their business during the event – Buffalo Wild Wings and Louise’s.  At this time, the committee is not aware of additional businesses interested in serving food and beverages outside of their premises.  However, the committee decided to ask for permission throughout the block rather than come back to the Commission at a later date if a business were to request permission to serve food and beverages outside of their existing premises.  No businesses will be allowed to have a food and beverage tent unless the coordinating committee approves of the request.

A letter was sent to the United Methodist Church on August 24 to provide notice of the distance restriction waiver for the event.  Reverend Brady verbally responded to Megan Gilliland and did not object to the request to allow for consumption of food and alcohol outside of the businesses’ existing premises.  He said that he was supportive of the event overall.

The coordinating committee consists of KU Athletics, The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, Lawrence Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the City of Lawrence and Downtown Lawrence, Inc.
