RE:

22 June 2010 City Commission Agenda Item

Multiway Stop – 11th Street & Louisiana Street

Background

On May 3, 2010, the Traffic Safety Commission heard a request to establish a MULTIWAY STOP at the intersection of 11th Street & Louisiana Street.  A temporary MULTIWAY STOP had been established at the intersection during the construction of The Oread Hotel in order to facilitate traffic flow around the area while portions of streets were closed and detours were in place.  Prior to the temporary installation Louisiana Street stopped for 11th Street.  11th Street is classified as a “collector” street and Louisiana is classified as a “local” residential street.

Traffic Safety Commission Action

Representatives of the University of Kansas appeared before the Commission and supported the request; they indicated that it had improved safety for the 575 students that live in GSP-Corbin and must cross the intersection daily to get to-and-from classes on the campus.  The Commission approved a recommendation to establish the MULTIWAY STOP on a 5-2 vote; those in favor cited the high number of pedestrians using the intersection while those opposed cited the fact that the vehicular traffic volumes did not meet the minimum criteria, there was no history of crashes or pedestrian accidents and a concern for salt trucks and other vehicles during inclement winter weather.

Action Request

Establish a MULTIWAY STOP at the intersection of 11th Street & Louisiana Street if appropriate.
