RE: Demolition of Building – Burroughs Creek Park
Please include the following item on the City Commission agenda for consideration at the June 15th, 2010 meeting:
Approve demolition of former Morton Concrete Block building located in Burroughs Creek Park.
Project Description
Over the past few months the City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has been working through the process to obtain all required approval and permits for the removal of the Morton Block Building located at 900 E 15th Street in Burroughs Creek Park. The building demolition is desired due to many structural issues with the building and to make way for future park development. The building was acquired by the City with the acquisitions related to the stormwater improvements in this area. The building proposed for demolition is not being used for storage (the western building is used for storage purposes and is not proposed for demolition). Attached are recent photographs of the exterior and interior of the building. This project required approval from the Lawrence Historic Recourse Commission do to the properties proximity to the Samuel Riggs House (approved May 20, 2010). Attached is a staff report prepared for HRC review that detail many of the specifics for the project.
Project Funding
It is estimated that the total cost of the demolition and removal will be $9400 and will be funded using the sales tax reserve.
Action Request
The City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department staff requests approval from the City Commission to demolish the former Morton Concrete Block building located in Burroughs Creek Park.
