April 20, 2010

Thank you for your participation in the 2009-2010 Safe Winter Walkways program.  The Safe Winter Walkways program is a partnership between the City of Lawrence and the Douglas County Senior Services Center that aims to match volunteers to individuals in our community that need assistance shoveling their sidewalks during winter storms.  This program is a benefit for our community and helps provide safe pedestrian access for citizens utilizing the city’s sidewalks.

This past winter was extremely harsh due to the cold temperatures and record amounts of snow received.  However, when the call went out that volunteers were needed, the support of the Lawrence community was evident.  We were able to match 52 elderly residents with volunteers and we respectively doubled the size of our program this past winter.

I urge you to consider volunteering again this fall for the Safe Winter Walkways program.  Without the support of volunteers like you, this program could not exist.  On behalf of the citizens who request our support in keeping their sidewalks clear, I thank you and commend you for your commitment to serve others in your community.

Sincerely,
