Introduction of Special Guests

Jim Morrison gave a report to the board concerning internship exchanges with Eutin.  Rex Clark and Frank Baron were in attendance to assist.   Report on internships.

Since 1998 Lawrence has sent to Eutin about one intern per year.  In exchange we have received about five or six in return.  Last year we sent three.  Two went to the banks, and one to the newspapers.  As part of recent 20th year exchange with Eutin Hans-Wilhelm Hagenof the Eutin Volksbank visited Lawrence and networked with a number of local people and organizations with the intent of growing and expanding these exchanges.  The Eutin side has expressed the interest in obtaining up to ten interns from Lawrence.  Likewise they want to increase the number of exchanges from Eutin to Lawrence.  This will require placements of interns in places beyond the traditional university.

Lawrence will soon be receiving three new interns; from the Volksbank, the Sparkasse, and city works (municipal administration) They should arrive in four to six weeks.  In addition there will be three graduate students visiting university departments.

Morrison will be visiting Eutin this summer to further this cause.  He also mentioned that funding sources of CIBER which have been available to assist these efforts will be ending next year.

Frank Baron has obtained support to provide two graduate students to support the Eutin-Lawrence high school exchange.  These graduate students will provide German language instruction and other curriculum support.  One student will be working on researching the potential exhibit of an artwork in Eutin which is related to Eutin.

20th Anniversary Hiratsuka

Hilliard indicated a meeting had occurred last Monday of the 20th Anniversary Committee.  Attending were Hilliard, Moody, Hyler and Ted Kuwana.  We are expecting approximately fifteen people to visit on October 7.  The Lawrence delegation would travel to Japan in October 2011.

The draft minutes of the January meeting were approved as distributed.

Review of the Accounting Documents (Herndon/Ground)

Herndon indicated that she had not yet had the opportunity to meet with Boley, but gave us an update relative to the status of the DCCF, and both Intrust accounts.

Budget (Hyler)

The budget was distributed by Hyler and was approved after minor changes.

Friends of Eutin (Albrecht)

Albrecht indicated that the new trip coordinator had identified approximately six students with interest in participating in the Eutin exchange this summer.  None of these students are enrolled in the traditional German I language programs.  A meeting with the students and families will occur soon.

 Membership recruitment (Josserand)

Josserand distributed a memo summarizing the current status of memberships and proposals relative to increasing membership, which would require the personal involvement of the board members.  A motion was made to generally approve of these recommendations.  Additional members have been appointed to a membership committee to assist in these efforts.
