Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   May 8, 2010, has been designated as National Train Day by the National Railroad Passenger Corporation; and

 

WHEREAS:   2010 marks 141 years of connecting travelers coast to coast and commemorates the day the first transcontinental railroad was created; and

 

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence recognizes there is a rich tradition of rail at the historic Santa Fe Station in Lawrence and it continues to be an integral part of the community’s current and future transportation; and

 

WHEREAS:   The advancement of House Bill 2552 and Senate Bill 409 in the Kansas State Legislature creates the potential for economic opportunities through rail travel; and

 

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence appreciates Amtrak’s investment in the Lawrence Santa Fe Station for signage and a platform upgrade; and

 

WHEREAS:   Passenger rail service provides an energy-efficient mode of transportation and offers an alternative for reduced impacts on the environment; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim May 8, 2010 to be
