RE:

Continuation of Outdoor Aquatic Center Agreement

Please include the following item on the City Commission consent agenda for consideration at the April 13th, 2010 meeting:

History

Since approximately 1970, the City and the Lawrence Aquahawks, Inc. have worked cooperatively to provide competitive swimming opportunities to the youth of Lawrence.  The Outdoor Aquatic Center has been made available to the Aquahawks for swimming practices in the summer at no charge.  The Indoor Aquatic Center was completed in 2001 and the Aquahawks began renting indoor space for their expanding team.  During the summer, the club uses both indoor and outdoor pools, but the tradition of no-charge use of the Outdoor Aquatic Center was maintained.  This agreement also allowed the Aquahawks to share their outdoor pool space with other clubs as space is available.  Since the first agreement was reached, this arrangement has worked to support this successful, competitive swimming program and has been a benefit to the youth of Lawrence.

The Parks and Recreation Department is comfortable continuing this 1-year use agreement with the Aquahawks for the 2010 pool season.  The Lawrence Aquahawks, Inc. has also expressed a sincere desire to continue this agreement.
