2010 Pavement Management Survey Summary |
Please consider the following information for the City Manager’s Report for the March 30, 2010 City Commission meeting.
During the 2010 Pavement Management Program presentation City Commissioners inquired how our program compared to other cities. From that inquiry we prepared a short survey and partnered with the American Public Works Association (APWA) to find similar communities throughout the United States. Surveys were sent and 16 communities responded:
Exeter, NH |
Tempe, AZ |
Corpus Christi, TX |
Emporia, KS |
Missouri City, TX |
Gainesville, FL |
San Luis Obispo, CA |
Allen Township, PA |
Des Moines, IA |
Chattanooga, TN |
Rockville, MD |
Surprise, AZ |
Roanoke, VA |
Davis, CA |
Kissimmee, FL |
Carrolton, TX |
Our survey included seven questions related to some basic aspects of how their communities maintained pavements. The following is a list of the questions asked:
1. How many lane miles does your community have?
2. Do you have a formal pavement management program?
3. Do you utilize an electronic database for tracking?
4. How do you rate your pavements? (in-house, contracted or both)
5. How much do you spend annually on pavement maintenance?
6. What types of maintenance tools do you utilize?
7. Has your community done a citizen survey related to your pavements?
A summary of the replies is attached, including the City of Lawrence.
We found that the City of Lawrence was very similar to the respondent cities in programs and process; compared to some communities we were doing more. Also, in 2009 the City Auditor performed a program audit which found that the City of Lawrence compared favorably to the 15 cities used as comparison.
Please let me know if I can provide you with additional information
