ONE (1) ROLL OFF TRUCK – PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT – #B1017

The Public Works, Solid Waste Division requested bids for a roll off truck.  The truck will be used by the Solid Waste Division for hauling large refuse containers.  It will replace Unit 487, a 2003 truck with high mileage and maintenance costs that is at the end of its service life as a front line snow truck.

The low bid from Kansas City Freightliner does not meet the City’s required turning radius specification therefore we recommend the second low bid from Diamond International that meets the City’s specifications.  This purchase was approved in the 2010 budgeting process.

Though the bid they submitted provided for a 2010 engine, Diamond International has advised us that some 2009 specification engines in the size and configuration needed for this truck are still available for purchase, though on a limited availability basis. These are engines that were being built and had the crankshaft in the cylinder block on December 31, 2009. This engine would meet the City’s bid specifications and can be legally placed into 2010 or current production chassis. If one of the 2009 engines is still available when we place our order it will reduce the purchase price to the City by $6,000.00 from the bid price, or to $130,948. 

Recommendation Action: 

Award bid for one (1) roll off truck for the Public Works Department to Diamond International for up to $136,948.00.  (Public Works/Solid Waste)
