RE: |
Railroad Crossing at 11th Street East of Haskell Avenue Installation of Flashing Lights and Gates |
Background.
The FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) and railroad companies provide funding for safety improvements for “at grade” crossings. In 2009 the FHWA, KDOT and BNSF Railway Company met with city staff to discuss the installation of warning lights and automatic gates at the crossing of 11th Street east of Haskell Avenue.
Project Funding.
This project is funded 100% by FHWA and BNSF Railroad. The agreement includes the city since it is within the corporate city limits and a city street; however, the city will have no expense from this installation. BNSF will do the work estimated at $243,528 and receive reimbursement from FHWA/KDOT.
Action Request:
Authorize Mayor to sign three-party agreement with KDOT and BNSF for the installation of warning lights and automatic gates at the 11th Street railroad crossing.
Respectfully submitted,
Charles F. Soules, P.E.
Director of Public Works
