WHEREAS:   This proclamation is to honor Ellie Ott for being named a 2010 Rhodes Scholar; and

 

WHEREAS:   Born and raised in Lawrence, Kansas, Ms. Ott attended the following Lawrence Public Schools: Hillcrest Elementary, West Junior High, and Lawrence Free State High School; and was also a 2008 Harry S. Truman Scholarship winner; and

 

WHEREAS:   As one of 32 U.S. winners from 23 institutions of higher learning, Ms. Ott was chosen from a pool of 216 interviewees from 97 colleges and universities; and

 

WHEREAS:   Ms. Ott plans to study migration and evidence-based social intervention, refugee and migration studies, and social science research methods at the University of Oxford in England; and

 

WHEREAS:   Ms. Ott is currently working in Washington, D.C. as a social science research analyst in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the Administration for Children and Families; and

 

 WHEREAS:  While her dream is to become a United Nations High Commissioner for refugees, Ms. Ott hopes to work in the U.S. Government Office of Refugee Resettlement, developing and overseeing social policy based on evidence.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Chestnut, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby recognize

Ellie Ott
