Commissioner Pennington presented a proposed Request for Proposals for Arts Community Impact Grants, to be funded with remainder of 2009-2010 budget.  Since Lawrence Arts Center has offered to create and maintain a contact list and calendar of arts events in Lawrence, (see below, E.1.), it was suggested that the funds be used to purchase and install a kiosk to house announcements of upcoming events, to be located centrally downtown.  Pennington will schedule a meeting of LCAC and LAC interested parties to look into this further, and to outline the new relationship between the two groups. 

 

E.  Regular Agenda Items

 

1.  Guest: Bill Carswell

Mr. Carswell discussed general changes in direction to take place at the Arts Center, concurrent with public comment and LCAC Community Survey results, including better coverage of events at the Arts Center and in town.  He is particularly interested in updating the Arts Center’s website and making it more attractive and informative.  He also mentioned that an electronic ticker-tape will be installed in the near future, in the lobby of the arts center, running constant announcements.  LAC’s tri-annual publication Arts In Action was also mentioned, and LCAC is invited to add submissions to it.  Mr. Carswell also stressed the importance of word of mouth advertising in a city of this size, and mentioned that public gathering places, banks, groceries, etc. are  very effective locations for notice boards. 

2.  Survey Results

Survey results were referred to throughout the meeting.

4.  Subcommittee Reports

 

 

A.  Outdoor Sculpture: Commissioner Griffin absent. 

 

B. Phoenix Awards: It was decided that awards should be held only at The Arts Center, whenever possible, as that facility now displays all past awards.  A date is pending, Commissioner Pennington will arrange this.  November 1 is most likely.  Bob Gent is the commissioned artist for 2009 awards. 

 

C.  Website: Ms. Stoddard will meet Andrea Wertzberger on Friday, Sept. 11 with updated to the site.  Andrea has agreed to maintain it free of cost. 

 

D.  Grants: No report.     

 

E.  Roundtable:  No report. 

 

 

F.  Commissioner Items
