WHEREAS: The 10th Annual Hennen’s American Public Library Rankings (HAPLR), a highly respected national library survey, have been compiled by Thomas J. Hennen, Jr., a library consultant in Racine, WI, and published in the American Library Association’s magazine, American Libraries; and
WHEREAS: This survey is based on statistics collected from nearly 9,000 public libraries; and
WHEREAS: This survey is based on 15 factors to measure the quality of service, the level of library usage, and the responsible expenditure of public funds; and
WHEREAS: The average HAPLR score for all Kansas public libraries was 638, while the Lawrence Public Library’s score was 799; and
WHEREAS: This score places the Lawrence Public Library in the 92nd percentile nationally for all public libraries serving communities with a population between 50,000 and 99,999;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Chestnut, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, along with my fellow Commissioners, congratulate the Lawrence Public Library on its ranking among the top ten percent in the nation among public libraries serving communities of our size and urge all citizens of this community to express their appreciation to the staff and board of trustees of the Lawrence Public Library.
