RE:

Fire Truck Engine Repair

Background

Unit 615 is a reserve Quint (1994 Spartan). This unit will be required to take over front line service in the event that one of the new Quint’s is out of service. This unit is down on power and smoking from the exhaust. Oil samples show coolant in the oil. Overhauling the engine is needed to return this unit to a dependable service level. The estimated residual value of this vehicle is $54,000.00 (2008).

Current Status:

Because of the complexity of this type of repair, the type of use and the need to have the unit down for a minimum amount of time our preferred course of action is to have the original engine dealer perform the work. We have asked Central Power Systems to give us estimates for a typical in-chassis overhaul based on the miles and hours of the engine. The cost of this repair would be roughly $9,700.00. We also asked for a worst case cost if the engine block and crankshaft were the only salvageable parts. This repair would cost $16,900.00. Without disassembly of the engine we will not be able to determine the exact cost. After disassembly the total cost of repair is $18,210.16; this includes a one year warranty.

Funding:

The repairs will be funded through the Fire Department maintenance budget.

Action Request:

Wave the formal bid process and allow the Central Maintenance Garage to proceed with repairs through Central Power Systems of Kansas City.
