RE:	Alcohol Beverages at South Park Gazebo (east side)

Staff received a request to allow alcoholic beverages on the east side of South Park for a special event.  Specific information about the request is included below.

Callahan Creek-Company Picnic on June 18, 2009

We received a request from Callahan Creek for a company picnic, to allow the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages on June 18, 2009 from Noon to 5:00 p.m.  Julie Martell has reserved South Park (east side) for June 18^th with the Parks & Recreation Department.  The possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages at South Park is prohibited by City Code. However, City Code section 4-105(E) allows the City to exempt, by ordinance, specified City property from the prohibition of alcoholic beverages on public property.  Therefore, an ordinance allowing the possession and consumption is required.   Ordinance No. 8417 is attached for the Commission’s consideration.  Section 1 of Ordinance No. 8417 authorizes the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages on June 18, 2009 in South Park from Noon to 5:00 p.m., provided such possession and consumption is otherwise pursuant to the Code of the City of Lawrence, Kansas and the laws of the State of Kansas and the rules and regulations of the Parks and Recreation Department.
