Lawrence, Kansas
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Municipal Airport was established October 12, 1929 to serve the fledging industry known as aviation; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Municipal Airport holds a select spot in our state’s history as one of the oldest, continuously operating airports; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Municipal Airport has a long-standing record of service to the community, county, and state, which includes training more than 200 military pilots during World War II and assisting with community rescue operations during the great flood of 1951; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Municipal Airport has become a vital economic catalyst for the City of Lawrence with its annual economic impact to the community exceeding $10 million annually; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Municipal Airport has grown and flourished into an aviation destination known for great service; pilot camaraderie, and outstanding facilities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Chestnut, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Saturday, May 16, 2009 as the
and invite the citizens of Lawrence to join in the festivities at the airport and thank those that serve the airport for their tireless efforts to make the airport a great representative as our community’s “front door” to the sky.
