Minutes of March 11, 2009

A. The meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM by the Acting Chair, Dave Loewenstein
B. The Minutes of the February meeting were reviewed and approved, with two spelling corrections.
C. New Business
1. Report from Nominating Committee
Nominating Committee suggested the following positions: Amy Kelly as Chair, Dave Loewenstein as Vice-Chair. Matthew Herren remains Secretary.
2. Commissioner Porsch moves to approve the officers as above. Commissioner Griffin seconds. Motion carries with 10 votes.
D. Unfinished Business
1. Public Art Navigator
It was decided by unanimous motion that the following works be submitted for inclusion on the Public Art Navigator tour: “Flame”, Hobb’s Stadium Mural, Brothers’ work at Visitor Center, Bender’s “Mobility” at Visitor Center, and “Moses” at KU by Teft.

2. Subcommittee Reports
A. ODSE: Commissioner Griffin reported that letters asking for current installations to be extended have been sent to artists. Parks and Rec. Department has expressed concern over maintenance/safety of some pieces. The response to letters and these concerns will be reflected in the current brochure/map. A meeting will take place April 2 about this.
B. Phoenix Awards: Commissioner Loewenstein announced that David Leamon and Lawrence Arts Center have agreed to house/display Phoenix Awards. There may not be awards this year, owing to budget cuts.
C. Website: Commissioner Herren agreed to pursue final launch of website.
D. Fund-raising and Project Development: Nothing to report.
E. Grants/Workshops: Commissioner Kelly noted that March 20 is the deadline for grant applications, to be reviewed at April’s meeting. Committee is still working on getting more applications and better awareness of this program.
F. Roundtable: Commissioner Pennington attended the Roundtable meeting earlier today and circulated flyers about upcoming events. She noted that KS Arts Commission is offering grants for job creation, which may be considered by The Lawrence Arts Commission. Also, on April 21, Arlene Goldberg will speak at Lawrence Arts Center about stability in arts during financial hard times.
F. Commissioner Items
Ms. Stoddard noted that the City Commission will vote on either March 24 or 31 to accept the changes to the Policy Manual.
After motion by Commissioner Loewenstein, seconded by Commissioner Griffin, Meeting was adjourned at 8:13 P.M.
