Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

 

WHEREAS:   The entire community can effect positive change with any volunteer action no matter how big or small; and

 

WHEREAS:   Our nation was built upon a spirit of volunteerism, and the talents and energies of American volunteers continue to be one of our greatest resources; and

 

WHEREAS:   Thousands of volunteers work in our community utilizing their time and talent daily to make a real difference in the lives of children, adults, and the elderly; and

 

WHEREAS:   The active involvement of citizens is needed today and always to combat growing societal inequities, to renew our confidence that these problems can be solved, and to strengthen our sense of community; and

 

WHEREAS:   The voluntary contributions of time and money demonstrates the generosity and compassion of countless citizens; and

 

WHEREAS:   During this week, in our community and all over the nation, service projects will be performed and volunteers recognized for their commitment to service; and

 

WHEREAS:   It is fitting for all citizens to join in this celebration of our rich volunteer heritage and to give special recognition to the volunteers and to the programs in which they participate;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael Dever, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the week of April 19 - 26, 2009 as

 

“NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK”
