WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library provides equity of access to library users no matter their age, income and socioeconomic background; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library plays a vital role in providing people with the resources they need to live, learn, and work in the 21st century; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library is an important part of the American Dream – a place for opportunity, education, self-help and lifelong learning; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library has witnessed a decade of record setting usage as more and more citizens discover the wealth of information and wonderful programs and services available at their library; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library can help you discover a world of knowledge, both in person and online, as well as personal service and assistance in finding what you need, when you need it; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library is a key player in the national discourse on intellectual freedom, equity of access, and narrowing the “digital divide;” and
WHEREAS: Libraries, librarians, and supporters across America are celebrating National Library Week April 12-18, 2009; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Public Library is celebrating 105 years of service to the Lawrence community with special events during National Library Week;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael Dever, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim April 12-18, 2009 to be
and encourage all residents to take advantage of the variety of library resources available at the Lawrence Public Library and to thank librarians for making information accessible to all who walk through the library’s doors.
