Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   Communities across the nation will celebrate the month of May as Bicycle Safety Month for the 53^rd consecutive year in 2009; and

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence will conduct the 13^th Annual Helmet Giveaway and Bike Rodeo on Saturday, April 11 at the University of Kansas; and

WHEREAS:   Bicycling activities during the month of May are initiated cooperatively between citizens and public service organizations; and

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence seeks to form partnerships with civic organizations to promote bicycle use, awareness, and education through the Bicycle Advisory Committee; and

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence is recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly Community; and

WHEREAS:   Bicycling as transportation and recreation is recognized as an effective solution to problems of energy dependency, traffic congestion, and public heath;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael Dever, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2009 to be

“BICYCLE SAFETY MONTH”

and the week of May 11 - 15, 2009 as

“Bike-To-Work Week”

in the City of Lawrence.
