Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

WHEREAS:   Recognizing that promoting good health and quality of life for everyone in the City of Lawrence is an important goal for our community; and

 

WHEREAS:   Public health succeeds by identifying and addressing patterns of disease, illness and injury in the population; and

 

WHEREAS:   Public health professionals have contributed to dramatic progress over the last century, adding fluoride to our drinking water, introducing seat belt laws and eliminating polio, among other advances that improve our health; and

 

WHEREAS:  National Public Health Week, established in 1995, provides the focused opportunity for the public and public health professionals to learn about today’s public health concerns and success stories which are vital to healthy communities; and

 

WHEREAS:   Our theme this year, “Building the Foundation for a Healthy America,” highlights the current public health challenges and stresses the contributions of public health in Lawrence and Douglas County; and

 

WHEREAS:    There can be no successful health reform without the support of a strong public health infrastructure; and

 

WHEREAS:    By supporting public health, we can build on the successes of the past and establish the solid foundation needed for a healthy community.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael Dever, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the week of April 6–12, 2009 as
