Recommendations of the Public Transit Advisory Committee for Route Changes to the City’s Transit System |
Please place the following item on the agenda for consideration of the City Commission at their meeting on March 31, 2009.
Receive recommendations of the Public Transit Advisory Committee regarding route changes to the City’s Transit System, and approve if appropriate.
Background
The City and University have been working to better coordinate transit services in Lawrence. In January, the City Commission authorized the City Manager to enter into a contract with Olsson Associates for coordinated route and schedule design. Under that contract, Olsson was to provide the City with an initial set of recommendations by March 2, 2009. Those recommendations are outlined in the attached report and include the following three recommendations specific to City transit routes:
· Create a new, coordinated route #11, replacing City Route #8 KU / South Iowa / Downtown, KUOW Route #24 31st & Iowa, and KUOW Route #25 Downtown
· Interline City Route #4 North Lawrence / Downtown and City Route #3 Iowa & Lakeview / Downtown
· Interline City Route #1 Prairie Park Nature Center / Downtown and City Route #2 HINU / Downtown
The City’s Public Transit Advisory Committee held a route hearing on March 24, 2009 where they received public comments on these recommendations. They unanimously recommend adoption of these route changes.
In addition, the University of Kansas held a route hearing on March 11 to receive public comment on these proposed routes. The KU Transit Commission, the body who ultimately approves routes for KU On Wheels, approved these recommended routes at their meeting on March 12, 2009.
