It is unlawful to own or maintain any exotic, wild or hybrid animals in the City with limited exceptions which then require a wild animal permit and $500k liability insurance.

 

A minimum lot size of 1 acre is required to keep any number of poultry in the City -- 4 per acre, not to exceed 12.

Overland Park

N –  no regulation that addresses fowls or hedgehogs per se.

 All domestic animals, excluding dogs and cats, but including cows and horses, although not limited thereto, shall be enclosed with a fence. Unlawful to allow any domestic animal to run at large.

Olathe

N – no regulation that addresses fowls or hedgehogs per se.

Not specifically addressed, but unlawful to permit animals including poultry to run at large in the city picket or tie any animal in any street for the purpose of grazing or feeding.

Topeka

Y – fowl

Unlawful for any person to keep, own, maintain or have in his possession or under control within the city limits, any live mammal, bird or reptile with 10 exceptions dogs, cats, rodents and birds,(except ostriches, emus, rheas and cassowaries) etc.  Fowl can not be kept within 50’ of another’s dwelling. There is an exemption for Zoos, aquariums, circuses, carnivals veterinary clinics and educational if properly licensed.

Salina, KS

The owning, harboring, keeping, possessing or selling of any wild, exotic, poisonous or vicious animals within the city limits is prohibited.   Exemption for Zoos, aquariums, circuses, carnivals veterinary clinics and educational if properly licensed.

 

The owning of any fowl within the city limits is prohibited, except: caged birds as pet within residence, ducks and geese with 400 sq of water per duck/goose, chickens in coop at least 50 feet from of another’s dwelling & max of 15.   No fowl inside residence. 


Wichita, KS

Y –for fowl and other domesticated animals --  Y- Hedgehogs if not wild

Any person keeping in his possession and control or who is keeping or harboring or maintaining within the corporate limits of the city more than three fowl, two rabbits, two dogs, two cats, or one sheep, goat, horse, cow, ratite, or more than two domestic animals of another kind, shall secure a permit.

 

No more than the following enumerated domestic animals, nor more than three different kinds of domestic animals shall be maintained on any one premise coming within the definition of the term residential classification: two nanny goats, twelve rabbits, twelve fowl other than pigeons, twenty-five pigeons, two horses or other equines, one cow, two sheep, two ratites, four dogs, four cats or two domestic animals of other kinds not specified

 

It is unlawful for any person to keep or maintain roosters (male chickens), guinea cocks, peacocks or other birds that by nature exhibit loud calls within the corporate limits of the city.

No person shall keep or permit to be kept on such person’s premises any wild or exotic animals for exhibition purposes, whether gratuitously or for a fee, or as a pet.

 

Generally, it is unlawful to keep or maintain any chicken coop, dove cote, rabbit hutch or other yard establishment for the housing of fowl or small animals, within 100 feet of any building used by humans other than the owner or keeper of animal s or fowl, or within 25 feet to the property line of the lot.   Animals and fowl kept shall be enclosed on all sides and not allowed to run or fly at large except for homing pigeons.  (Exceptions: research lab, sale within produce market or store ok if confined in small coops, boxes or cages or less than 5 birds are kept in home as pets such as: parrots, doves, finches, parakeets and canaries)

Leavenworth, KS

No person shall keep or permit to be kept on such person's premises any wild, hybrid or exotic animal for exhibition purposes, whether gratuitously or for a fee, or as a pet.

 

A "wild, hybrid or exotic animal" is a nondomesticated animal or any animal which can normally be found in the wild state, excluding rabbits, ferrets, gerbils, hamsters, mice, guinea pigs, small amphibians, nonpoisonous snakes less than six feet in length, laboratory rats which have been bred in captivity and which have never known the wilds, birds, and fish normally kept as pets.

 

No person shall permit any livestock or domestic fowl to run at large within the city limits.

 

It shall be unlawful to keep domestic fowl within 75 feet of any dwelling other than that of the owner or tenant thereof.

Manhattan, KS

It shall be unlawful for any person to allow chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys or other domestic fowl owned by or under the control of such person to run at large within the city.

 

It shall be unlawful for any person to own, keep, maintain or have in his possession or under his control within the city any poisonous reptile or any other dangerous wild animal or reptile, any vicious or dangerous domesticated animal or any other animal or reptile of wild, vicious or dangerous propensities.
