RE: |
Request for a SIGNALIZED MID-BLOCK PEDESTRIAN CROSSING on Peterson Road, west of Arrowhead Drive November 3, 2008 Traffic Safety Commission – Item No. 5 |
Background: On November 3, 2008, the Traffic Safety Commission heard a request from area residents to establish a SIGNALIZED PEDESTRIAN CROSSING on Peterson Road at Arrowhead Drive.
Six (6) area residents spoke in favor of the request, and had previously provided petitions with approximately 100 signatures from area residents. Concerns are the volume and speed of traffic, approximately 4700 vehicles per day at approximately 47-48MPH, and the difficulty crossing the street. A SCHOOL REDUCED SPEED LIMIT with FLASHING BEACONS and an ADULT GUARD had previously been established; however, they are only in effect during school crossing times.
The TSC voted unanimously 9-0 recommending a MID-BLOCK PEDESTRIAN-ACTIVATED crossing on Peterson Road west of Arrowhead Drive. Similar crossings have recently been approved on New Hampshire Street at the Arts Center and on 9th Street between Sunset Drive & Hilltop Drive. Estimated cost for the proposed MID-BLOCK CROSSING is $35,000.00-$45,000.00.
