Request for TRAFFIC CALMING on 9th Street adjacent to Sunset Hill Elementary School October 6, 2008 Traffic Safety Commission – Item No. 4 |
Background: On October 6, 2008, the Traffic Safety Commission heard a request to construct TRAFFIC CALMING devices on 9th Street adjacent to Sunset Hill Elementary School.
Chris Bay, Principal of Sunset Hill Elementary School, and Trina Langston, area resident, spoke in favor of the request, noting that traffic doesn’t slow down even though there are reduced speed signs and an adult crossing guard. This location does meet the city’s criteria for traffic calming; the daily traffic volume is approximately 7100 which exceed the 3000 requirement, and the 85th percentile speed is approximately 37.6mph which exceeds the 30mph speed limit by more than 5mph. It should be noted that widening and a pedestrian refuge island were approved for this location by the City Commission on March 8, 2005, but has not yet been funded.
The TSC voted unanimously 6-0 recommending approval of the request, which would consist of two (2) speed cushions.
