Please include the following item on the City Commission consent agenda for consideration at the August 26, 2008 meeting:

Description:   Purchase of Off Duty/Back-up Firearms for Police Officers

The Lawrence Police Department has arranged for the purchase of off duty/back-up firearms for police officers requesting them.  The officers will be repaying the City for the cost of the firearms through payroll deduction.

Details:  A total of 42 Glock 27 FXD 5LB pistols are being purchased from OMB Guns, a division of OMB’s Express Police Supply of Lenexa, Kansas.  This supplier is the designated law enforcement regional distributor for the manufacturer. The total cost is $16,724.40, all of which will be repaid to the City by the officers through payroll deduction, under the City’s Police Department Sworn Personnel Equipment Lease/Purchase Program.

Funding.  The cost is initially funded from account # 205-1000-510.42-34 which is the City’s Equipment Reserve Fund, Other Operating Supplies, Police Lease Purchases. It is then replenished from the payroll deductions each pay period.

Action Request.  Police Department staff requests approval from the City Commission to authorize this purchase and the payment of $16,724.40 to OMB’s Express Police Supply.
