RE: |
Amend School Crossing Control Policy – TSC 6/2/08 – Item 7 |
Background: On June 2, 2008, the Traffic Safety Commission heard a request to install a SCHOOL REDUCED SPEED ZONE on 9th Street adjacent to Sunset Hill Elementary School.
The School Crossing Control Policy requires that a REDUCED SPEED ZONE be removed if an ADULT GUARD is established at a crossing. The same requirement used to apply to a REDUCED SPEED ZONE WITH FLASHING BEACON; however, that requirement was previously removed.
Two members of the public spoke in favor of the request and noted that the crossing guard isn’t always at the crossing and that cars do not stop for children even if they’re waiting at the crosswalk and some actually honk and yell at students to hurry-up when crossing.
The TSC commented that 9th Street is a troublesome street and has had several requests before the commission in the past.
The TSC voted unanimously 8-0 to recommend amending the School Crossing Control Policy and installing the SCHOOL REDUCED SPEED ZONE signs.
