ORDINANCE NO. 8287
AN ORDINANCE OF THE
CITY OF LAWRENCE, KANSAS AMENDING CHAPTER V, ARTICLES 3 AND 6 OF THE CODE OF
THE CITY OF LAWRENCE, KANSAS, 2008 EDITION, AND AMENDMENTS THERETO, CONCERNING
DOMESTIC CLOTHES DRYER VENTING.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE GOVERNING BODY
OF THE CITY OF
Section 1.
Chapter V, Article 6, Section 5-604.5 of the Code of the City of
Lawrence, Kansas, 2008 Edition, and amendments thereto, is hereby amended to
read as follows:
5-604.5 Section 504.6 of the International Mechanical
Code and the indicated subsections are amended to read as follows:
504.6
Domestic clothes dryer ducts. Exhaust
ducts for domestic clothes dryers shall be constructed of metal and shall have
a smooth interior finish. The exhaust duct shall be a minimum nominal size of 4
inches (102 mm) in diameter. The entire exhaust system shall be supported and
secured in place. The male end of the duct at overlapped duct joints shall
extend in the direction of airflow. Clothes dryer transition ducts used to
connect the appliance to the exhaust duct system shall be limited to single
lengths not to exceed 8 feet (2438 mm) and shall be listed and labeled for the
application. Transition ducts shall not be concealed within construction.
504.6.1 Maximum length. The maximum length of a clothes dryer exhaust duct
shall not exceed 25 feet (7620 mm) from the dryer location to the outlet
terminal. The maximum length of the duct shall be reduced 2˝ feet (762 mm) for
each 45 degree (0.79 rad) bend and 5 feet (1524 mm) for each 90 degree (1.6
rad) bend. The maximum length of the exhaust duct does not include the
transition duct.
Exception: In multi-family
dwellings where the make and model of the clothes dryer to be installed is
known and the manufacturer’s installation instructions for such dryer are
provided to the code official, the maximum length of the exhaust duct,
including any transition duct, shall be permitted to be in accordance with the
dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions.
A placard shall be permanently affixed in the dryer area stating the
length of the venting and number of bends.
Included on the placard shall be the following: Warning: Any dryer installed must be installed
in accordance with the dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions and be
acceptable for the vent length indicated above.
Section 2.
Chapter V, Article 3, Section 5-313 of the Code of the City of Lawrence,
Kansas, 2008 Edition, and amendments thereto, is hereby enacted to read as
follows:
5-313.5 Section M1502.6 of the International
Residential Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
M1502.6 Duct length.
The maximum length of a clothes dryer exhaust duct shall not
exceed 25 feet (7620 mm) from the dryer location to the wall or roof
termination. The maximum length of the duct shall be reduced 2.5 feet (762 mm)
for each 45-degree (0.8 rad) bend and 5 feet (1524 mm) for each 90-degree (1.6
rad) bend. The maximum length of the exhaust duct does not include the
transition duct.
Exceptions:
1. Where the make and
model of the clothes dryer to be installed is known and the manufacturer’s installation instructions for the dryer are
provided to the building official, the
maximum length of the exhaust duct, including any
transition duct, shall be permitted to be in accordance with the dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions.
2. Where large-radius
45-degree (0.8 rad) and 90-degree (1.6 rad) bends are installed, determination of the equivalent length of
clothes dryer exhaust duct for each
bend by engineering calculation in accordance with
the ASHRAE Fundamentals Handbook shall be permitted.
Section 3. If any provision, clause, sentence
or paragraph of this ordinance is found to unconstitutional or is otherwise
held invalid by any court of competent jurisdiction, it shall not affect the
validity of any remaining parts of this ordinance.
Section 4. This ordinance shall be in full
force and take effect on and after its publication as provided by law.
