Police Department hosts 10th annual Police Camp

For three days from June 12th through the 14th, the Lawrence Police Department hosted the 10th annual Police Camp for 60 area youths age 8 - 12.  Under the direction of the Community Services Division, the department’s School Resource Officers organized the event with over 20 hours of fun, information and challenges.

The camp was established to promote a positive interaction between youth and Police Officers in a structured, friendly and educational setting. Those participating in Police Camp experienced interactive demonstrations by Lawrence Police Officers and Detectives in the areas of self defense, physical fitness, stranger safety, crime scene processing and police car stops. The camp participants also enjoyed demonstrations from other agencies such as K-9’s and Underwater Search and Recovery from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and LPD, bomb detection and disposal with the Olathe Fire Department, fire safety with the “Smoke House” with Lawrence Douglas County Fire and Medical, seatbelt safety with the Kansas Highway Patrol, and a LifeStar helicopter fly-in.

Historic Resources Commission agenda packets go online

In a continuing effort to make information regarding Planning items more accessible to the public, the Historic Resources Commission agenda packets were made available online in June at http://www.lawrenceplanning.org/bc-hrcagendas.shtml. The packets include reports and all graphical supporting documents so that the public and the Historic Resources Commission have early and convenient access to the information. In addition, the commission members will use the recently installed computer equipment to conduct their meetings in the City Commission chambers.  This will save energy and resources as thousands of printed pages per year will be taken out of production.
