RE:

Lawrence Live Banner Request

The Convention and Visitors Bureau requests approval from the City Commission to hang a 30’ X 40’ banner (see preliminary design) on the north end of the New Hampshire Street parking garage from May 28 through June 15, as a “sign of community interest.” This banner differs from most “sign of community interest” requests due to it large size, but as long as it can be temporarily mounted without permanently attaching any mounting hardware to the garage structure, staff can support the request. Also, this banner would hang at the same time as another banner requested by Downtown Lawrence, Inc. (also on the consent agenda for the May 27 City Commission meeting).

The banner will advertise for a public event called Lawrence Live to be held on public and private property on the south side of the intersection of 9th Street and New Hampshire Street on June 13-14. Lawrence Live is planned to coincide with the Ironman Triathlon held on June 15 at Clinton Lake. Approvals for Lawrence Live, including a Special Event Permit, use of right-of-way permits and an alcohol permit, will be considered at the June 3 City Commission meeting.

ACTION:      Approve as a “sign of community interest” a request from the Convention and Visitors Bureau to hang a banner on the north end of the New Hampshire Street Parking Garage from May 28 through June 15 advertising Lawrence Live.
