Mayor and Chair of the Arts Commission to present award checks for 14^th Annual Lawrence Arts Commission Community Arts Grants

Project Description/History:

The Lawrence Arts Commission-Community Arts Grant program began in 1995 with the expressed purpose of providing grants funds intended as start-off money for projects or special community art related ventures with a particular focus on encouraging the arts within the Lawrence community.

Since the Community Arts Grant program inception, the Lawrence Arts Commission has provided grant funding totaling approximately $60,000 to 140 organizations and artists.

Project Status/Details:

The Lawrence Arts Commission’s 14^th Annual Community Arts Grant recommendations were selected based on the following five criteria: 1) proposal clarity, 2) benefit to the community, 3) support from community, 4) potential for increasing community participation in the arts, and 5) community collaboration & partnership.

The 2008 Community Arts Grant Awardees include the following:

6. Edge Community Art Garden – Central Jr. High Edge After School/Laura Leonard	$1,000.00
7. Visual Voices-Voices of Youth – Women of Color Quilters Network – Lawrence Chapter/ Marla Jackson	$1,000.00
Total	$6,733.70

Project Funding: Funding for this program is through the Parks & Recreation – Special Recreation Fund

Action Requested: The Lawrence Arts Commission recommends and request that the Mayor issue the 2008 Community Arts Grant checks to the grant awardees as shown in the table above at the May 13, 2008 City Commission meeting.
