General Goals for Paving
Projects
·
Most economical
process possible
·
Best finished
product possible (smooth, min. no. joints)
·
Minimize
construction schedule
·
Minimize impacts
on traffic and adjacent properties
Potential Implications of
Increased Restrictions
·
Higher costs
with lost efficiency
·
Lower quality of
finished product if done piecemeal (rougher, more joints)
·
Longer
construction schedule
·
May or may not
minimize impacts on traffic and adjacent properties
·
Lack of interest
by contractors
Proposed Approach for
·
Milling of
entire length can occur under traffic
o Some obstructions from parked cars could slow down
progress
·
Close 2-3 block
segments at a time for patching and paving
o Cross streets will be closed except 9th –
no work through the
o Perform all patching and then paving
o Reopen segment
·
Move to next 2-3
block segment
·
Concrete collars
around manholes and water valves in pavement will be done after paving is
complete. Contractor will provide traffic control to minimize traffic impacts.
·
Similar approach
is suggested for paving
·
No closure of
Approximate Time Required
·
Milling &
cleanup – 2-3 days
·
Closure for each
segment – 3-4 days depending on amount of patching required
·
Total Time on
Mass (if closures allowed) - 12-15 days
·
Contractor will
be required to work continuously on Mass until complete
(Remember – Construction is
weather dependent. We will try to avoid starting work when weather forecasts
indicate completion may delayed for several days)
Project Schedule
Assumptions/Questions
·
Work on Mass
must be completed before Sidewalk Sale (July 17)
·
Will contractor
be permitted to work on weekends- Sat and/or Sun?
·
Are there other
scheduled events in the downtown area that need to be considered?
·
Need to have
contract awarded and ready to start by June 1 to provide adequate “contingency”
in the schedule for weather impacts and still meet July 17 date
