RE:

Request for “Resident Parking Only” Signs in 900 Block of Rhode Island

I was contacted this week by a resident of the 900 block of Rhode Island Street regarding the Wilco concert planned for May 14, to be held on the 900 block of New Hampshire Street. The resident requested that we post signs reading “Resident Parking Only, Violators Will Be Towed” on his block the day of the concert to dissuade concert goers from parking there.

The Traffic Engineering Division could produce two metal signs to mount on saw horse barricades blocking one half of Rhode Island Street at 9th and 10th streets. Residents could drive around the barricades. Non-residents would at least have to note the prohibition before driving into the block. Enforcement would not really be possible as there would be no way to tell if parked vehicles belonged to neighborhood residents or not. The resident making this request acknowledges the enforcement difficulties, but feels just having the signs posted would be helpful to the neighborhood. Because of the enforcement difficulties, staff recommends posting “resident parking only” signs without reference to towing.

ACTION:      Approve temporary “Resident Parking Only, Violators Will Be Towed” signs on the 900 block of Rhode Island on May 14, 2008, if appropriate.
