Proclamation
WHEREAS: Mathematics is the foundation discipline
for science and technology, and mathematical reasoning, analysis, and
problem-solving are increasingly vital in preparing our youth to lead
productive and responsible lives; and
WHEREAS: Mathematics is a living and growing
discipline, continually being created and discovered. The power of mathematics is revealed in the
richness and beauty of its intellectual structure and the diversity of its
applications to almost every field of human endeavor; and
WHEREAS: The beauty, challenge, and excitement of
mathematics and its potential to enrich individual lives require that through
mathematics education we make its opportunities available to all our citizens;
and
WHEREAS: The Joint Policy Board for Mathematics, a
joint venture of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical
Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics,
was established to articulate and advocate sound public policy concerning the
mathematical sciences and the field’s ability to contribute to the public
welfare; and
WHEREAS: The Department of Mathematics of the
University of Kansas is dedicated to the creation, application, and teaching of
mathematics and to serving the mathematical needs of the community;
