VEHICLE TOWING SERVICE –
POLICE DEPARTMENT – #B08009
The
Police Department requested bids for towing service from seven vendors. The City Tow contract is a self-sustaining operation in that
the City is reimbursed for the tow by the owner of the vehicle being
towed. Only one bid was received, possibly due to the requirement set out in the
contract documents such as size of tow trucks, insurance requirements, and 24/7
service. The sole bid from Hillcrest
Wrecker was evaluated and determined to be a reasonable bid. Hillcrest charges the public $100 per
tow for tows off of private property and $45 per tow for simple tows of
disabled vehicles to a repair facility.
In those cases, there are car keys available and the owner is with the
car. City contract tows are more
complicated in that the vehicle is towed to Hillcrest's storage facility, has
to be secured and Hillcrest staff need to be available 24/7 to release the car
once payment has been made and a release secured. This
is a one year contract with the option to renew for one additional year
providing funds are available and both parties agree. This purchase was approved in the 2008
budgeting process.
