Lawrence Arts Commission
Minutes of October 10, 2007
Present: Evie Rapport, chair; Donna Griffin; Elizabeth Hatchett; Matt Herren; Lora Jost; Tom King; David Loewenstein; Margaret Morris; John Reeves; Leslie vonHolten; and Sandra Wiechert.
Absent: none.

A. The meeting was called to order by the chair at 7 pm in the Jayhawk Room of
Fire Station #5.
B. The September Minutes were accepted as amended.
C.1.a. Commission Chair Rapport encouraged all Arts Commissioners to attend the dedication of Beacon, a Percent for Art project, at Fire Station #4, 2121 Wakarusa, at
4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2.
b. The new LAC policy manual is now with the City’s legal department for review. Possibly it will be returned in time for the Commission’s Nov. 14th meeting.
c. Nominations for the 2008 Kansas Arts Commission’s Governor’s Arts Award are due by Nov. 1.
2. There were no subcommittee reports from Grants, Percent for Art, and Website.
b. Commissioner Reeves said nothing yet has been heard from Parks and Recreation about its part in a new policy for the Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibit.
f. Commissioner Wiechert reported on the Arts Roundtable gathering that noon, and distributed fliers on Lawrence’s many upcoming cultural arts events.
D. Unfinished Business
1. Commissioner Rapport distributed copies of new committee assignments for 2008.
Some adjustments were made.
2. Commissioner Jost shared her idea for a new committee: Fundraising and Project Development. Following positive discussion, commissioners Morris and King moved and seconded establishing this committee. The motion passed. Commissioner Jost will chair this committee whose members will be commissioners Griffin, Morris, and Loewenstein.
3. The chair reminded the subcommittee chairs to write policy and working manuals concerning their subcommittee’s functions.
E. New Business
The remainder of the meeting was spent in reading, reviewing, and discussing the nominations for the 12th annual Phoenix Awards. After tallying one ballot, eight winners and their award designations were agreed upon by all. Commissioners Morris and Herren moved and seconded that the following list be declared final. The motion passed.

Commissioner Wiechert, who is chairing the Phoenix committee, thanked all members for their dedication to this project. She and commissioners Rapport and Loewenstein will notify all winners and their nominators immediately. The press and all media will be notified by the City communication officer, Lisa Patterson. All commissioners are encouraged to attend and help host the awards ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Lawrence Arts Center. The reception following will be catered by Maceli’s.
F. Commissioners King and Griffin moved and seconded the meeting be adjourned.
The motion passed about 9:45 pm.
