RE:

Request for ADULT CROSSING GUARD at the intersection of Bob Billings Parkway & George Williams Way

Background:  On October 1, 2007, the Traffic Safety Commission heard a request to establish an ADULT CROSSING GUARD at the intersection of Bob Billings Parkway & George Williams Way.

Data collected August 30, August 31 and September 4 found that this location does not meet the City’s minimum requirements for consideration of an ADULT CROSSING GUARD.

Carrie Mandigo, 1600 Bob White Drive, spoke in favor of an adult guard; she stated that there were a number of families with several children that would be walking to school if there was an adult guard at the intersection; it is a four-lane road and there have been several accidents in the area due to high speed; I don’t feel safe letting my kids cross there; and, we should be promoting health and fitness and being environmentally friendly.

The TSC voted 5-4 to recommend denying the request since it does not meet the City’s School Crossing Control Policy for an adult guard.  Three of the members that opposed the motion felt that there should be a trial period with a guard to see if the children would in fact walk if a guard was in place; the other member in opposition felt that the community should have an opportunity to make their case with the City Commission.
