Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

 

WHEREAS:   Lathrop Bullene opened a dry goods store in the fall of 1857 in the 700 block of Massachusetts Street; and

 

WHEREAS:   His son-in-law, A. D. Weaver, purchased the store in 1886, moving it to it’s current Ninth and Massachusetts location in 1929; and

 

WHEREAS:   Committed and optimistic owners have, through the years, weathered a fire during Quantrill’s Raid, the Great Depression, and two World Wars; and

 

WHEREAS:   Weaver’s Department Store is a historical and commercial landmark, and an integral part of the success of Downtown Lawrence; and

 

WHEREAS:   Customer service and “going the extra mile” have enabled this business to compete in a changing marketplace for 150 years; and

 

WHEREAS:   Weaver’s Department Store has endured as an independent department store, on the same street, in the same town, and under family ownerships that trace back to the store’s founders;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sue Hack, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby recognize the

 

“150TH ANNIVERSARY OF WEAVER’S DEPARTMENT STORE”
