August 7, 2007 Agenda Item |
Please include the following item on the City Commission consent agenda for information at the August 7, 2007 meeting:
Update on Streetlight Revisions on Kasold – Bob Billings Pkwy to 22nd St. This is a report on the status of proposed revisions to the streetlights on Kasold to address concerns of neighboring residents.
Project History. Upgraded streetlighting was approved for the Kasold Road project at the March 27, 2007 commission meeting. The lighting was designed by Westar consistent with standards for a major arterial roadway. However, after installation abutting residents expressed concerns about the higher lighting level.
Project Details. City staff contacted Westar to discuss options. A different type of light fixture, with a flat lens, was installed at two locations to determine the effect. Staff has measured light levels at various locations along the route to determine the difference and found the flat lenses reduce the lighting levels outside of the road right-of-way considerably and still provide adequate lighting for the safety of vehicles and pedestrians using the walkways.
Project Status. Westar has ordered and received additional flat lens fixtures to replace all of the lights on Kasold. They are scheduling the work to begin shortly. There may be some temporary lane closures on the inside lanes of Kasold as crews replace the fixtures.
Project Funding. Westar has asked the City to participate in the cost of the revisions in the amount of $1,195.87. These costs are included in the final project cost summary presented with Change Order No. 2.
Action Request. No action required.
Respectfully Submitted,
Dena E. Mezger, P.E.
