Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   Communities across the nation will celebrate the month of May as Bicycle Safety Month for the 51^st consecutive year in 2007; and

WHEREAS:   The Douglas County Safe KIDS Coalition and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical will conduct the 12^th Annual Helmet Giveaway and Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 12 at Free State High School; and

WHEREAS:   Bicycling activities during the month of May are initiated cooperatively between citizens and public service organizations; and

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence seeks to form partnerships with civic organizations to promote bicycle use, awareness, and education through the Bicycle Advisory Committee; and

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence is recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly Community; and

WHEREAS:   Bicycling as transportation and recreation is recognized as an effective solution to problems of energy dependency, traffic congestion, and public heath;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sue Hack, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2007 to be

“BICYCLE SAFETY MONTH”

and the week of May 14 - 18, 2007 as

“Bike-To-Work Week”

in the City of Lawrence.
